It begins when the tulips are done.
That purple globe is not one flower but a cluster of hundreds of small ones, and they don't open at once but from the outside in, for weeks on end. That is why there is something there for a bee for so long. Most flower in May and June, and once finished the globe keeps its shape for months.

Plant in September or October, in a spot in full sun. Set small varieties about 8 cm deep and 8 to 10 cm apart. The large bulbs can go 15 cm deep and at least 20 cm from each other. Allium copes well with drought, and it works in a deep pot too.
After flowering there is almost nothing to do. Let the foliage wither and leave the spent globe standing. Underground the bulb makes new bulbs in the meantime, so a group gets a little bigger every year.
Deer and mice stay away from allium. The bulb smells of onion, and they don't like that.
