Description
Unique colour progression. Yellow-green at the base, deep purple at the tip. It colours from top to bottom through high summer. May to August, stems around 60 to 90 centimetres. An affordable bulb with lots of character.
Allium sphaerocephalon is also called "drumsticks". Small egg-shaped heads on thin stems. Green turns purple as summer progresses. That gives months of interest in the border. Curiosity: the sap was once used against moths. The plant was thought to ward off insects and moles. Yet the flowers attract pollinators in masses. Relatively affordable bulb; plant in large loose groups through hardy perennial borders. Flowers when perennials are already full in leaf but not yet blooming. Perfect timing as an in-between bloomer. Hugely popular cut flower.
