This is a large-flowered crocus (Crocus vernus) that blooms very early. Silver-grey outside with soft mauve inside. The open flower shows finely striped lilac petals around large orange stamens. Dutch cultivar ("Dutch crocus"). Important early nectar source for the first bumblebees. With a hundred bulbs or more you get a flowing carpet. In lawn and under trees it naturalises easily. Also good in pots and balcony boxes. Leave the foliage alone after flowering. RHS Award of Garden Merit from the British horticultural society.
The Pioneer. He runs ahead of the troops without fear.
The bulbs come from the Dutch bulb fields. They are hand-selected for quality and size and delivered at the right planting time. A larger bulb holds more food, and you see that in the flower: more blooms, and fuller.
