Planting amaryllis in a pot: how to get good flowering from the start
- Choose a sturdy pot with a drainage hole. Leave some room around the bulb, but do not choose a pot that is far too large.
- Use loose potting compost and ensure good drainage, so excess water can drain away easily.
- Place the amaryllis bulb in the pot with the top part visible above the compost. Water lightly after planting, and only give more once growth really starts.

Caring for amaryllis in a pot
- Place your amaryllis in a bright spot, preferably near a window, at a moderate room temperature. For more care tips, see Amaryllis verzorgen.
- Avoid prolonged bright midday sun in a hot spot; the pot will dry out too quickly.
- Water sparingly at first, a little more during bud formation and flowering, and less again later as the plant moves towards dormancy.
- Do not keep the potting compost wet for long periods. Poor drainage increases the risk of bulb and root rot. A little feed during active growth is usually enough.
Keeping amaryllis after flowering
- Remove spent flowers. Once the flower stem is fully spent, you can remove that too.
- Leave the leaves in place. This helps the bulb build up reserves again for another flowering cycle.
- If you want to keep your amaryllis for next year, see Amaryllis overhouden; gradually reduce watering and wait until the leaves yellow naturally. After that, the bulb can rest in the pot somewhere cool, dark and dry.
- If you want to start again, repotting with fresh compost is a logical step. Bear in mind that flowering again takes time and can vary in strength and timing depending on the bulb, position and care.
Frequently asked questions about amaryllis in a pot
Below, you will find short answers to questions that often come up when choosing and caring for amaryllis in a pot.
Is amaryllis hardy?
In the Netherlands, amaryllis is usually not reliably hardy. If your plant is in a pot, keep it frost-free, or at least very sheltered, during cold periods. That is exactly why growing in a pot is so useful: you can easily move the bulb to a place where it stays safe and dry.
Can I plant an amaryllis bulb without soil?
Yes, an amaryllis bulb can also be started without potting compost, for example as amaryllis in a glass pot or in water. That is, however, a different growing method from this category. Make sure the whole bulb is not standing in water; only the roots should reach the water. In potting compost, growth is usually more stable and the chance of flowering again is often greater. Can you plant an amaryllis bulb in the garden?
You can, but amaryllis is mainly grown as a potted plant. Outdoors, it only works in a warm, sheltered spot with very good drainage and protection from frost. For more control over flowering, position and overwintering, a pot is usually the most practical choice.
When is the right time for amaryllis?
For indoor flowering, amaryllis for pots is usually planted in autumn or early winter. Exactly when the flowers open depends on light, warmth and the planting time. If you want colour in your home around the festive season, a Christmas amaryllis is a classic choice.
