Description
April, May: tall spire full of dark purple to near-black hanging bells. Silver-green foliage. 70 to 90 centimeters. A flower that whispers secrets.
Fritillaria persica is a real showstopper. The upright stem carries dozens of small dark purple bells. They hang elegantly downward. Plant in good-draining soil. Wet feet are fatal. Set it in sun to half-shade. The plant is happy on constantly moist, humus-rich, draining soil. Rodents and deer have no interest. Fragrant, excellent for cutting. Naturalizes, but slowly. Plant in groups of three or more for full impact. This flower does not wait for attention. It creates its own moment.
