Why a tulip mix gives so much spring impact

A tulip mix often gives more movement than a single tulip variety. Because different colours and flower shapes come together, it creates a fuller, livelier look in the garden, including in mixes with double tulips. Some mixes are put together for a strong, simultaneous flowering display that really steals the show. Other mixes give longer enjoyment because the flowering is more spread out. That makes a tulip mix attractive if you want plenty of atmosphere without having to puzzle over separate varieties yourself. They work beautifully in the border, in groups along a path, or in generous pots and containers on the patio or balcony.

Which tulip mix suits your garden?

You choose based on What suits best?
Appearance Choose a colourful and exuberant blend for lots of energy, tone-on-tone for calm, dark and contrasting for extra drama, or soft and romantic for a light spring look.
Flower shape Classic tulips give a neat and familiar look. Double tulips look fuller, fringed tulips add detail and parrot tulips create a playful, eye-catching effect.
Place in the garden More compact mixes are practical for pots and containers. Taller mixes make more impact in the border or give that lovely cut-flower effect many garden lovers are looking for.
Purpose of your planting If you mainly want a spectacular seasonal display, choose a striking garden mix. If you want a better chance of them returning, look within the range at perennial or botanical tulips.

Planting a tulip mix: when, where and how deep

  • Plant in autumn: flower bulbs are planted from September up to and including November. Tulips can still go into the ground until mid-December, as long as the soil is not frozen.
  • Choose the right spot: a position in the sun or light partial shade works best. Make sure the soil is airy and well drained, and avoid places where water remains.
  • Plant correctly: place each bulb with the point facing upwards and leave enough space between the bulbs so they can develop well. For the correct planting depth and spacing, follow the information for the chosen tulip mix. To calculate the right density for your area, see How many bulbs per m².
  • Work in groups: it is better to plant a mix together rather than loosely scattered around. That way you get a more natural and fuller result when the tulips come into flower.
  • Also suitable for pots and containers: always use pots with drainage holes and fill them with suitable potting compost. Even in pots, group planting gives the most beautiful and richest effect. For a longer flowering period in containers, Create a bulb lasagne. If you are planting in containers, also read the Bulbs for pots guide.

Care during and after flowering

After planting, tulips mainly need peace and quiet. Water only moderately, because overly wet soil is the main cause of bulb rot. During flowering, you can remove spent blooms, but afterwards leave the foliage in place until it turns yellow naturally. This allows the bulb to store energy. Tulips are hardy, but many large-flowered garden mixes often return less exuberantly in later years. If you want plenty of colour every spring, you can plant fresh bulbs each season. If you are looking for more continuity, explore Perennial tulips or botanical tulips within the range.

View the range and choose the mix that suits your spring

Compare the tulip mixes within the tulip collection by colour blend, flower shape and flowering time, then choose what suits your spot in the garden. Something that works well for a border is often different from what suits a pot or a cut-flower garden. If you want a longer spring display, combine your tulip mix with other spring bulbs from the range. View the different mixes now, choose your favourite and order in time for the autumn planting season.
