Begonia bulbs

Begonia bulbs

Flowers all summer in partial shade.

On one plant there are large double flowers with smaller single ones beside them. Snip off the small ones and the large ones grow even bigger, because all the strength then goes one way. It flowers from June or July until the first night frost; the upright kinds grow 20 to 40 cm, and the trailing kinds you let fall over the edge of a pot.

You can start the tubers indoors in a pot from March onwards, and they will flower earlier outside. Plant them shallow, with the hollow side facing up, so the top sits only 1 to 2 cm below the soil. In a pot or container keep 15 to 20 cm between them, in the border 20 to 30 cm.

Choose a spot out of the fierce midday sun and out of the wind. Water regularly without making the soil soggy, and remove spent flowers.

In autumn, lift the tubers out of the ground. Let them dry for a week and store them cool, dry and frost-free, in a paper bag for instance, until the next spring.

Practical: Begonias are not hardy here. Do not plant them until May, once there is no more frost, and lift the tubers out of the ground in autumn.
