Spikes that flower right through the summer.

Lay a gladiolus down flat and within a day the tip bends upwards again, because it always knows where up is. One spike flowers for about two weeks, from the bottom up, so growers plant a handful more every fortnight. They flower from July into September; the large-flowered ones grow 90 to 150 cm, the smaller ones 50 to 70 cm.

Planting is possible from the end of March to the beginning of June, once it no longer freezes. Large corms go 10 to 15 cm deep, small ones about 8 cm, with 10 to 15 cm between them. Choose full sun and a spot out of the wind.

Do it like the growers: plant a handful more every two weeks and you have fresh spikes all summer. Tall kinds can be tied up, or push some extra soil against the base so they do not blow over.

Let the leaves die back after flowering. Lift the corms out of the ground in autumn, let them dry for a week or two and store them dry and frost-free until spring.

Practical: Gladioli are not hardy here. Plant them between the end of March and the beginning of June, once the risk of frost has passed, put them out of the wind, and lift the corms out of the ground in autumn.
